PS3 component costs

A new teardown analysis by iSupply shows that Sony is still losing about $40 with every PlayStation 3 they sell, although that's considerably down from the $250 they were losing with each console when it first launched three years ago (via CNET).

iSupply's report shows that a current PS3 Slim costs Sony $336.27 to manufacture, which is down nearly $500 from the $805 it cost Sony to produce a PS3 when it first launched. So even at the lower price point of $299, Sony is losing only $37 per console (rounded out to about $40 after factoring in marketing, box costs, and other expenses).

"In light of these factors, the PlayStation 3 probably is already at or near the tipping point for profitability," iSuppli's Andrew Rassweiler concluded.
