Perhaps unsurprisingly, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has already broken the record for pre-orders at GameStop. "As of today, the number of pre-order reservations we've taken for the game is the highest for any title we've ever sold in our 6,200 store network," said GameStop executive Tony Bartel to USA Today. The figure is being taken as yet another indicator that Modern Warfare 2 will be among the highest-selling games of the year, based on franchise popularity and a heavy marketing push.
Despite some unpopular choices making headlines recently, Activision is rightly preparing for a hit, and the strength of this title will probably offset slumping sales of the company's traditionally reliable music franchises. Guitar Hero 5 had an unusually slow start, and the company tempered expectations for DJ Hero. Modern Warfare 2's surefire sales status should help them breathe easier.
